Despite Sandy's efforts to help them work through their problems, Jason and Courtney remained at odds. Courtney and Sandy headed off to look for skating costumes, but Sandy privately made a call to Jason asking him to meet them at the shop. She hoped they would be able to reconcile.
Dr. Smith, acting upon orders from someone else, planted a bomb in Courtney's car that would go off the next time the engine was turned off. He panicked when Sandy got in the car with Courtney, however, and chased them down. The chase ended when he rammed into a cement truck, which then struck the girls' car as well.
Neither Courtney nor Sandy was hurt, since only the rear corner of their car hit the truck, and the bomb never went off because the car was not shut. They raced over to the other car and were shocked to see that Dr. Smith had been driving it! He confessed that he'd been behind everything that had happened to the Chases, and had been working for Shannon. Sandy forgave him and he died in her arms. Meanwhile, Jason and Courtney put their quarrel behind them and reunited.

The mysterious man arrived at Claire's apartment. He was not a resurrected James as she'd feared, but rather Ryan Moriani, her ex-boyfriend from her teenage years. Claire blasted him for "raping" her, but he reminded her that, no matter how unhappy she'd been about it, she had consented to everything. Still, Ryan apologized for taking advantage of her and promised that he'd changed. The young man at the Chase home announced himself to be Alex Marshall, Sally's son. Courtney became irate when Helen revealed that she and Don had decided not to tell Courtney about Don's first marriage. In private, Helen asks Alex if he is Don's son; the young man tells her that the reason Sally's marriage to Don fell apart was because she got pregnant by another man.

Unfortunately, Sally walked into his hotel room and spoke; Helen heard her and slammed down the phone. She vowed that she and Don are through.
Don blew up at Sally, blaming her for all his troubles. His rage appeared to be at least partially the result of another headache, but he became lucid in time to realize that he will need Sally around to help him deal with the stolen painting. He did his best to curb his anger -- for now.
Claire continued to be plagued by thoughts of Ryan. While making love to Tim, she became so disturbed by her memories that she had to rush out, physically ill. She worried that she'll never be free of Ryan.

Later, the elder Moriani warned his son (who had absentmindedly forgotten the extra cash) to get his mind off of Claire.
Sarah hung up on Brent when he called her at the NY hotel. He continued calling, however, and she finally picked up and laid into him for taking Molly to the charity dinner. They hung up on bitter terms after another argument, and each separately wondered if perhaps it would be better to just cut their losses and move on.
