Episode #17
Immediately After #16
TEASER
INT. DELIVERY ROOM EVENING
The buzz of hospital personnel and activity fills the back-ground.
CLAIRE holds the newborn BABY in the bed. TIM stands over them, looking startled.
CLAIRE
Tim! Tim! What is it?
TIM
(confused)
I – I remember it all.
CLAIRE
Your memory?!?
TIM
Yeah.
CLAIRE
It’s back?
TIM
Uh-huh.
CLAIRE
You’re serious?!
Tim nods. Claire squeals happily.
TIM
I can’t believe it. All of a
sudden – I saw the baby, and
it all sort of shot back into
my head.
CLAIRE
So you remember everything?
TIM
Yeah.
CLAIRE
Even … ?
Tim’s eyes grow wide as he realizes what she’s leading up to.
CLAIRE
(cont’d)
Even who shot you?
Tim appears nervous.
INT. HOTEL ROOM LATE EVENING
MOLLY sits on the couch. BRENT is standing, paused as if in the middle of a conversation. CRAIG stands in the doorway, looking intrigued.
CRAIG
Did she feel what?
MOLLY
(stalling)
The, uh, the …
BRENT
Draft. The draft. I could swear
there’s a window open in here
somewhere. I don’t think there
is, but it sure feels like it.
I mean, we checked—
CRAIG
Okay, Brent. Actually, it is
a little chilly in here.
MOLLY
It is, isn’t it?
(beat)
So, did you find anything out
from that lead? About the
stalker?
CRAIG
Yeah. Actually, I found out
something very important.
ACT I
INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM EVENING
BILL, PAULA, and SARAH are seated around the waiting room. JASON and COURTNEY sit nearby. DR. SMITH stands by the entrance.
PAULA
She had the baby?
DR. SMITH
A very healthy boy, indeed.
PAULA
Oh, Bill, we’re grandparents!
She leaps joyfully and throws her arms around Bill.
BILL
Thanks, Doctor.
Exit Dr. Smith.
BILL
(cont’d)
I can’t believe it. It’s just
a miracle that nothing went
wrong, what with all of the
stress she’s been under lately.
COURTNEY
The whole thing really is a
miracle.
SARAH
I’m gonna call Molly at the
hotel and tell her.
PAULA
Good idea, honey.
Exit Sarah.
Jason turns to Courtney.
JASON
I’m an uncle, Court – can
you believe it?
COURTNEY
It’s amazing, isn’t it? Just
like that, they brought a new
life into the world.
JASON
Like you said, it’s really
a miracle.
COURTNEY
Being here for all of this
just makes me realize how
much I wanna have kids of my
own someday.
JASON
Me too.
They catch each other’s eyes for a second and then sit in a moment of awkward silence.
INT. HOTEL ROOM LATE EVENING
MOLLY, BRENT, and CRAIG are scattered around the living area.
MOLLY
Craig, what did you find out?
Craig closes the door behind him as he steps fully into the room.
CRAIG
I just realized that what
we were afraid of from the
beginning of this trip is
true.
BRENT
What’s that?
CRAIG
This was a setup. I mean, we
figured that John Smith was
probably an alias, right?
BRENT
Yeah, of course.
CRAIG
Well, I kept digging, and all
I found is that he can’t be
here in Denver. He must be—
He is interrupted by the ringing of the phone. Ominous music sounds.
INT. DELIVERY ROOM EVENING
CLAIRE
Well, Tim, who did it?
Tim doesn’t respond.
CLAIRE
Tim, what’s wrong? Tell me!
Tim stares past her in shock.
CUT TO:
FLASHBACK
EXT. ALLEY NIGHT
A GUN is held against TIM’S chest. It is seen to be held by ALAN.
ALAN
James Robbins sent me.
A gunshot sounds.
CUT TO:
INT. DELIVERY ROOM EVENING
CLAIRE holds the BABY in bed. TIM stares past her, appearing shocked. Hospital employees fill the background.
CLAIRE
(slightly annoyed)
Who was it, Tim? Who shot you?
TIM
Some guy. A thug.
CLAIRE
(skeptical)
A random thug came up, shot
you, and ran off without even
taking anything? I find that
difficult to believe.
(beat)
Are you sure your memory is
really back?
TIM
Oh, I’m positive.
CLAIRE
Then why did this guy shoot
you?
TIM
(mumbling)
Your father …
(trails off)
CUT TO:
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY SAME
DIANE BISHOP has her ear pressed against the door. She seems to be listening intently.
ACT II
INT. HOTEL ROOM LATE EVENING
The phone continues to ring. CRAIG, MOLLY, and BRENT all appear worried.
MOLLY
(frightened)
Could it be … ?
BRENT
I don’t know. Don’t worry. I’ll
get it.
Brent picks up the phone.
BRENT
Hello?
SARAH (OS)
Brent?!
BRENT
Sarah?
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY EVENING
SARAH stands at a payphone.
SARAH
Yeah, it’s me. What are you
doing there – in Molly’s room,
I mean?
BRENT (OS)
Oh – Craig went out, so I was
staying with her.
SARAH
Oh …
(beat)
Look, can you put her on?
BRENT (OS)
Yeah. Love you.
SARAH
I love you too.
INT. HOTEL ROOM LATE EVENING
BRENT hands MOLLY the phone. CRAIG stands in the background.
MOLLY
Hey, Sarah.
SARAH (OS)
Hi. Um, I’m calling to let you
know what’s going on here. You
might wanna get home soon.
MOLLY
Why? What’s wrong?
SARAH (OS)
Claire had the baby.
MOLLY
She did?
SARAH (OS)
A boy. Just thought I’d let
you know.
MOLLY
Yeah, thanks. I’ll get back
there as soon as possible.
SARAH (OS)
Okay, bye.
MOLLY
Bye.
Molly hangs up the phone.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY EVENING
SARAH hangs up the payphone.
SARAH
(thinking)
Dammit! Damn her! Can’t she
keep her hands off of him for
a minute? He’s my husband! She
always gets what she wants …
can’t she just let me be happy
for once?
A tear rolls down Sarah’s cheek. She wipes it away angrily and storms off.
INT. DELIVERY ROOM SAME
TIM stands over CLAIRE and the BABY. In progress.
CLAIRE
What?
TIM
(mumbling)
Your father …
CLAIRE
My father?
TIM
Yeah.
CLAIRE
My father was behind this?
TIM
Uh-huh.
CLAIRE
How— How do you know? Was he
the one who shot you?
TIM
No, no. This guy – Alan. One
of his goons.
Claire begins to cry.
TIM
(cont’d)
Because I had been pressuring
you to move to Chicago. I
talked back to him—
CLAIRE
(through tears)
Oh, that was smart.
TIM
He shot me.
(beat)
He said your father had told
him to threaten me.
CLAIRE
I can’t believe he would—
She is cut off again by a fresh flood of tears.
TIM
But I don’t think he meant
for me to be shot. I think
the guy got a little carried
away.
CLAIRE
Is that supposed to help?
TIM
Calm down, Claire.
CLAIRE
Like hell I will! I just found
out that my father had a guy
shoot my husband. All this,
and I just had a baby! What do
you expect?
Across the room, two NURSES watch the scene.
NURSE #1
Boy, I’ve heard of postpartum
depression before, but this
is insane!
NURSE #2
Mmm-hmm.
CUT TO:
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY SAME
DIANE has her ear pressed against the door to the delivery room.
DIANE
(sotto voce)
Oh, this is too good … I knew
there was something creepy
about her father, but I didn’t
think it was this bad!
(beat)
But now for the difficult part:
What can I get out of this?
ACT III
INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM LATE EVENING
PAULA and BILL wait. JASON and COURTNEY are also in the room, talking.
Enter SARAH.
PAULA
Did you get a hold of Molly?
SARAH
Of course. They’re on their
way back.
BILL
Did they find anything out
about the stalker?
SARAH
She didn’t say anything about
it. Neither did Brent.
PAULA
Oh, that’s too bad. I hope
they catch this guy and lock
him up. He’s ruining the life
of an innocent woman.
BILL
I’m sure she’ll be fine. After
all, Brent can protect her,
can’t he, Sarah?
SARAH
(bitter)
Of course he can.
Enter DR. SMITH.
DR. SMITH
Mr. and Mrs. Fisher?
PAULA
Yes?
DR. SMITH
I have some news.
PAULA
About the baby?
DR. SMITH
No, the baby is fine.
(beat)
It is good news: Tim’s memory
has returned.
Hold on Paula’s surprise.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY SAME
DIANE stands alone, just outside the door to the delivery room.
DIANE
(sotto voce)
I just came here to meddle
a little, and I ended up with
this ace up my sleeve. But
how to play it?
INT. DELIVERY ROOM SAME
TIM and CLAIRE (holding the BABY) have a conversation in progress.
TIM
Look, maybe I shouldn’t have
said anything.
CLAIRE
Of course you should have.
(beat)
I just can’t believe that
he’d stoop to this.
TIM
I tried to tell the guy off—
CLAIRE
—and he shot you on an impulse.
That’s the problem with my
dad. He doesn’t know how to
handle things.
TIM
You can say that again.
CLAIRE
No, I mean, he always tries
to force everyone, threaten
everyone to get his way. It
would’ve been a lot more
productive if he’d just come
over and talked to us about
it.
TIM
Not to mention a lot less
painful.
CLAIRE
I’ve known for so long that
he was involved in these type
of things, but I didn’t even
realize just how terrible it
is until now.
She looks up at Tim and down at the baby, tears in her eyes.
CLAIRE
(screaming)
I hate him! I hate that man!
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY SAME
DIANE stands close to the door, listening.
The sounds of CLAIRE screaming can be heard.
DIANE
And I think I know just what
to do with this …
She takes out her cellular phone and begins to dial.
ACT IV
INT. HOSPITAL NIGHT
Standing in a small hallway, DIANE closes her cell phone and puts it away. She appears pleased.
DIANE
(sotto voce)
This is too good … too damn
good …
INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM SAME
BILL, PAULA, and SARAH wait. Enter TIM.
PAULA
Tim!
She runs up and hugs him.
BILL
So, how does it feel?
TIM
Which part?
BILL
All of it!
TIM
This father thing is amazing!
I know it sounds cliched, but
the moment you see that baby
you feel this …
PAULA
Love.
TIM
Exactly. Just this complete,
total, unconditional love.
SARAH
How’s Claire doing?
TIM
I believe she finally fell
asleep.
SARAH
That’s good. She probably is
in need of some serious rest.
TIM
I’m sure she is.
PAULA
So, what’s my grandson’s name?
TIM
Travis Paul Fisher.
PAULA
Paul? For me?
TIM
Yep. We thought a little
tribute was in line.
PAULA
I’m honored, of course.
TIM
Dad, you’re getting the next
one.
BILL
Fine by me. What about Claire’s
dad?
TIM
Oh, I don’t think we’ll be
naming any kids after him any
time soon.
PAULA
Tim! That’s a terrible thing
to say? Why not?
TIM
As you all know, I finally got
my memory back.
PAULA
Yeah?
TIM
James was behind my shooting.
Bill, Paula, and Sarah are shocked.
INT. CAR SAME
JASON is driving COURTNEY home.
JASON
I’m so happy that you’re
gonna be able to skate again.
It seems like, finally, this
family is starting to have
some luck again.
COURTNEY
I know you’re committed to
Shannon for a little while
more, but I can just use that
time to get fully recovered.
And then next season—
JASON
—we can pick up where we left
off.
(beat)
I just hope Shannon takes it
okay.
COURTNEY
(thinking)
We wouldn’t want to hurt crazy
old Shannon, would we?
JASON
But I guess she’s known all
along that my arrangement with
her was only temporary.
Courtney seems to struggle for the right words.
COURTNEY
You know, there’s something
about her that I just don’t
like.
JASON
(surprised)
Really? Why?
COURTNEY
Oh … I don’t really know. Just
a gut feeling, I guess.
A few moments of silence follow.
JASON
Hmm … Well, all I can say is
that I’m thrilled that Tim &
Claire are finally doing well.
CUT TO:
INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM SAME
DIANE enters as TIM speaks to BILL, PAULA, and SARAH. She looks on from the doorway.
PAULA
I can’t believe that! How
come Claire had never told
you about her father’s doings?
TIM
She did … a few months ago,
when I was pushing her to move
to Chicago.
SARAH
Oh yeah – why wouldn’t she?
Tim considers his answer for a moment.
TIM
I’m not really at liberty to
say.
PAULA
Oh … but you were aware of
all this?
TIM
Yeah. She warned me.
BILL
And he doesn’t mind that she
knows? Why doesn’t she turn
him in—
TIM
He doesn’t know.
BILL
What?
TIM
He doesn’t know that she
knows.
PAULA
Well, then she could turn him
in anonymously.
TIM
She’s scared. And after what
he did to me, I don’t blame
her.
SARAH
I’m definitely getting some
warrants issued for James &
the shooter – what was his
name?
TIM
His first name was Alan.
SARAH
Well, I’m getting warrants
for their arrests.
TIM
Go right ahead.
Diane approaches them.
DIANE
Hi, Tim.
TIM
Oh, hi!
(beat)
Diane, these are my parents,
Bill and Paula. And this is
my sister, Sarah. Everyone,
this is my boss, Diane Bishop.
Greetings are exchanged.
TIM
When did you get here?
DIANE
A little while ago. I’ve been
searching for you. I came to
visit someone and noticed that
Claire was in Delivery. How is
she?
TIM
Sleeping. She’s exhausted.
And the baby is fine.
DIANE
Oh, that’s nice to hear.
TIM
Hey, guess what?
DIANE
What?
TIM
I got my memory back!
DIANE
I don’t believe it!
TIM
Yeah, I know.
DIANE
Two blessings in one day, huh?
Tim nods in response.
DIANE
(cont’d)
Everyone looks tired.
PAULA
We are!
DIANE
Why don’t we head on out of
here?
BILL
Sounds like a good idea to
me.
As the group departs, the focus shifts to the clock. It can be seen to read "10:22."
ACT V
INT. CRAIG’S APARTMENT NIGHT
CRAIG pushes a suitcase into the closet in the living area. MOLLY comes out of the bedroom.
MOLLY
I am so damn tired … I can’t
believe what a waste that
trip to Denver was.
CRAIG
As far as I’m concerned, it
couldn’t possibly have been
a waste. I’ll do whatever I
can to protect you. It was
just another precaution we
had to take.
MOLLY
I guess you’re right.
Craig wraps his arms around her.
CRAIG
It’s gonna be alright, Molly.
I’ll do whatever I can to
protect you.
An intense pounding can be heard on the door. It seems to be coming from outside.
MOLLY
Oh, no, Craig … it can’t be
him, can it?
CUT TO:
EXT. CRAIG’S APARTMENT SAME
A FIGURE stands in the dark, pounding on the apartment’s door with a baseball bat. As the view moves around, it reveals the face of the intruder. He can be seen to be DR. SMITH. He continues to pound upon the door with the bat.
CUT TO:
INT. HOSPITAL SAME
The focus is on the clock in the hallway. It reads "12:33."
Through a window, an incubator can be seen, containing a sleeping BABY and marked with the name "Fisher."
The focus remains on the window and the sleeping baby. All appears calm. All of a sudden, a club strikes the window, shattering the glass.
A pair of gloved hands reaches out and picks up the baby.
