Several Days After #15

TEASER
INT. DOCTOR’S OFFICE	EARLY AFTERNOON
In the foreground, DR. SMITH examines a medical chart. In the background, COURTNEY CHASE sits upon a cot, waiting.
Dr. Smith turns around to face Courtney, taking his focus away from the medical chart.
				DR. SMITH
				Courtney, I have looked over
these X-rays of your leg time
and time again. You are most
				certainly making progress in
				your recovery.
				COURTNEY
Well, I know that! I got rid
of my crutches over a week ago.
				DR. SMITH
No, no – I mean extreme prog-
				ress.
				COURTNEY
				Like what?
				DR. SMITH
				Your leg is almost fully
				healed.
Hold on Courtney’s reaction.
										CUT TO:
EXT. CHASE HOME SAME
Clad in suspicious clothing, SHANNON PARISH lurks outside the Chase home.
She carries with her a BAG.
				SHANNON
				(sotto voce)
				Oh, Courtney … poor, innocent,
				stupid Courtney. You think you
can just outsmart me by telling
				Jason the "truth." Little does
				she realize she’s playing with
the big girls now … and I will
not let that bitch take Jason
				away from me – never!
INT. DIANE’S OFFICE SAME
DIANE BISHOP sits behind her desk, working on some papers.
The intercom buzzes. Diane pushes a button.
				DIANE
				Yes?
				SECRETARY (OS)
				Ms. Bishop, there’s a James
				Robbins here to see you.
				DIANE
				Who?
				(beat)
				What’s this about?
A short pause ensues.
				SECRETARY (OS)
				He says it’s personal business.
				DIANE
Uh … send him in. Thanks.
Diane develops a puzzled look as she waits.
INT. APARTMENT SAME
Asleep on the couch is TIM FISHER.
										FADE TO:
FLASHBACK
EXT. ALLEY NIGHT
The view is blurry.
A HAND holds a GUN near TIM’S chest. Slowly the hand pulls the trigger. A gunshot sounds.
										CUT TO:
INT. APARTMENT EARLY AFTERNOON
TIM, asleep on the couch, jerks awake to a sitting position, visibly shaken by his flashback.
INT. HOTEL ROOM	EARLY EVENING
In the small kitchen area, MOLLY FISHER is cooking.
She reaches up and opens a cupboard. As she reaches her hand into the cupboard, another, MALE HAND goes up towards it. Both hands pull away.
The view pans down the male hand and reveals BRENT TAYLOR.
				BRENT
				Go ahead. I— I don’t need it.
				You take it.
				MOLLY
				No, go ahead. Really.
				BRENT
				I insist.
				MOLLY
				Really?
				BRENT
				Really.
			MOLLY
			Thanks.
Their eyes meet briefly in an awkward spell.
She reaches back into the cupboard and pulls out a box. She returns to her cooking. As Brent heads out of the kitchen, Molly stops cooking.
				MOLLY
				Brent, we’ve gotta stop this.
Brent is caught off guard.
				BRENT
				What?
				MOLLY
				We can’t keep tiptoeing around
				what’s happened between us. We
				need to talk.
ACT I
INT. DOCTOR’S OFFICE	EARLY AFTERNOON
DR. SMITH is holding a medical chart and speaking with COURTNEY.
				COURTNEY
Do you— How soon can I go back
				to skating?
				DR. SMITH
I really think that you could
				go right back now—
				COURTNEY
				(interrupting)
				Now?
				(thinking)
				This is amazing. Jason will
be back with me soon, and then
				maybe Shannon will calm down.
				DR. SMITH
Well, yes, now … but you’ll
have to be careful – very
				careful. You’ll have to take
				it slow, and continue physical
				therapy for quite a while.
				COURTNEY
Still, that is great news, Dr!
				Are you through?
				DR. SMITH
				Yeah, I guess.
				COURTNEY
I’m gonna go change, okay? I’ll
				be right back.
Courtney runs out of the room.
				DR. SMITH
				(sotto voce)
				Be careful, Courtney – very
				careful. This injury is still
				very fragile, and even the
				slightest disturbance could
				ruin your career forever.
INT. CHASE HOME SAME
In the living room, all is still. Enter SHANNON, carrying a BAG.
				SHANNON
That was a little too easy.
All I had to do was wait until
				Courtney’s mom left, and then
I was able to sneak in through
				the garage. Too easy …
She walks over to the mantle. She picks up a PICTURE of JASON and COURTNEY in skating attire and stares at it.
				SHANNON
				(furiously)
				Never again, Courtney— Never
				again!!
She flings the framed photo to the floor and the glass shatters into a million pieces.
Returning to the mantle, she picks up a PICTURE of Courtney with MR. and MRS. CHASE. She seems to cringe inwardly at the family photo.
										CUT TO:
FLASHBACK
A middle-aged MAN and WOMAN scream frantically through a distorted picture. Fire seems to be engulfing them.
										CUT TO:
INT. CHASE HOME EARLY AFTERNOON
In the living room, SHANNON stands by the mantle, staring at a PICTURE of the CHASE FAMILY.
				SHANNON
				(angry)
				Damn you, Courtney!
She slams the photo down on the mantle and storms away, up the staircase.
The focus slides back across the living-room floor, and onto a pile of scattered, smashed glass. Amongst the debris lay a photo frame and the picture of COURTNEY and JASON.
INT. DIANE’S OFFICE SAME
DIANE sits behind her desk. Enter JAMES ROBBINS.
				DIANE
				Mr. Robbins, I presume?
				JAMES
				Yes.
				(beat)
Have you any idea who I am, Ms.
				Bishop?
				DIANE
				No, I must say I don’t.
				JAMES
				I didn’t think you would. I’m
				James Robbins, father of Claire
				Robbins.
				DIANE
				Who?
				JAMES
You probably know her as Claire
				Fisher – Tim’s wife.
				DIANE
				Oh, yes, of course.
				(thinking)
				Oh, crap.
She raises a mug.
				DIANE
				(cont’d)
				Would you like some coffee?
				JAMES
Look, I’m gonna get right to
the point. I was with Claire
at the hospital on the night
				that Tim allegedly began to
think that you were his wife.
				I saw you – didn’t think much
of it at the time, especially
				after Claire explained that
				you’re Tim’s boss.
				DIANE
Not to be rude, Mr. Robbins,
				but I’m afraid I’m missing
				your point.
				JAMES
Let me finish. As I said, I
was there at the hospital. But
as I think about it, the more
I retrace everything in my head,
I can’t help but wonder if there
				was something suspicious going
				on.
				DIANE
Well, of course. It’s not every
day that a man mistakes his
boss for his wife due to a fit
of amnesia brought on by a
mysterious shooting. The whole
thing sounds quite suspicious,
if I say so myself.
JAMES
You know exactly what I mean.
DIANE
Just what are you suggesting,
Mr. Robbins?
INT. APARTMENT SAME
In the living room, TIM is lying on the couch. Enter CLAIRE, huffing and puffing.
				TIM
				What is it, honey?
				CLAIRE
				(hurried)
				We’ve gotta go, Tim.
				TIM
				You mean—
				CLAIRE
				The baby.
Tim jumps to his feet.
				TIM
				(frantic)
You need to get packed. Come
				on—
Claire holds up a BAG.
				CLAIRE
I’m one step ahead of you. I
				packed weeks ago, remember?
				TIM
				No … actually, I don’t.
				CLAIRE
				(jokingly)
				Damn amnesia!
				TIM
Why are we standing here chat-
				ting? Let’s go!
Tim herds Claire out the front door.
ACT II
INT. HOTEL ROOM EARLY EVENING
MOLLY and BRENT face each other in the kitchen.
				BRENT
				(shyly)
What do you mean, talk? There—
There’s nothing for us to talk
				about.
				MOLLY
				Maybe nothing happened, but
you know as well as I do that
				we’ve been avoiding each other
for a few days. And Craig’s been
				around, so that’s been okay.
But now he’s not – hopefully
he’ll find some kind of lead in
				this case – and we’re alone –
				together. We can’t just duck
each other forever … After all,
				you’re married to my sister.
				BRENT
				And that’s precisely why we
can’t get into this. What if …
				MOLLY
				What, Brent? What if what?
				BRENT
				Nothing.
				(beat)
But it’s just too weird. I’m
				committed to Sarah. That’s final.
				MOLLY
				I know you are, and I don’t
want her to find out about
this any more than you do. But
don’t you think she’ll pick up
on something between us if we
don’t try to work this out?
				BRENT
				Yeah, I guess you’re right.
				MOLLY
				I know I am.
				(beat)
So, are you ready to talk?
				BRENT
				(hesitantly)
				Yeah. Yeah, I am.
INT. FISHER HOME AFTERNOON
The doorbell rings in the empty entry hall. Enter JASON FISHER, who opens the door. On the other side is COURTNEY.
				JASON
				Oh, hi. Come on in.
Courtney steps inside.
				JASON
				(cont’d)
				What’s up?
				COURTNEY
				Jason, I have some really
				great news.
				JASON
				What is it?
				COURTNEY
				I’m ready to start skating
				again.
Jason is dumbstruck.
INT. CHASE HOME	SAME
In Courtney’s room, the doorknob turns. The door opens. Enter SHANNON, with a BAG.
				SHANNON
				I can’t believe I’m doing this.
				But I have to—
She reaches into the bag and pulls out a small SPEAKER. After searching around for a moment, she finds a place to hide it and does so.
				SHANNON
				(thinking)
				Too easy …
EXT. CHASE HOME SAME
HELEN CHASE rummages through her purse on the front porch.
				HELEN
				I can’t believe I forgot my
				checkbook!
She pulls out her keys and opens the door.
INT. CHASE HOME SAME
Back in Courtney’s room, SHANNON hears the sound of a door-
knob turning and a door opening. She freezes in fright.
INT. HOSPITAL SAME
TIM and CLAIRE rush into the entry hall and up to the front desk. Seated there is a DESK CLERK.
				DESK CLERK
				Labor?
				TIM
				Yeah. The name’s Fisher –
				Claire Fisher.
				DESK CLERK
				Just a sec.
The desk clerk runs out of frame and returns with some hospital employees.
They seat Claire in a wheelchair. She is wheeled out of the scene.
				DESK CLERK
So, Mr. Fisher, is this your
				first child?
				TIM
				Yeah.
(laughing nervously)
Can you tell?
Tim stares in the direction that Claire was taken.
ACT III
INT. FISHER HOME AFTERNOON
COURTNEY stands in the entry hall, next to an open-mouthed JASON.
				JASON
				(disbelieving)
				You can start skating again?
				COURTNEY
				That’s what Dr. Smith said!
				JASON
				(suddenly worried)
Uh … well, you know I’m still
				committed to Shannon for a
				couple more months.
				COURTNEY
				No, I understand. Besides, I
need to take it really slow.
				JASON
				Well, what’s important is
				that you’re getting better.
He pulls her into a hug.
INT. CHASE HOME SAME
The upstairs hallway is empty. HELEN comes up the stairs.
				HELEN
I must’ve left it in my room …
She heads down the hallway.
The door to Courtney’s room opens and out peeks the head of SHANNON. She looks both ways and, seeing no sign of anyone, rushes out and down the stairs.
Helen emerges from the master bedroom.
				HELEN
				(mumbling)
I could swear I heard some-
				thing …
She moves further down the hallway.
				HELEN
				Court? Courtney? Are you still
				here?
Down in the living room, at the bottom of the stairs, Shannon freezes again.
				SHANNON
I’ve got to get out of here.
She makes a beeline for the door. Just then, footsteps can be heard coming down the stairs. Panicked, Shannon looks around and catches sight of a nearby closet.
INT. DIANE’S OFFICE SAME
JAMES and DIANE have a conversation in progress.
				JAMES
You know full well what I’m
				talking about, Ms. Bishop. Don’t
you dare play dumb with me.
				DIANE
I will not even justify your
				wild accusations, Mr. Robbins.
Now, if you will, I’d like you
				to leave.
				JAMES
				And I’ll honor your request,
				but not without some parting
				words: Cut it out. Now.
				DIANE
				(upset)
				I can’t believe—
				JAMES
Just let my daughter be happy.
				Or else.
				DIANE
				Or else what?
James develops a worried look.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY	SAME
TIM approaches a payphone, dials a number, and waits. The ringing can be heard.
				JASON (OS)
				Hello?
				TIM
Hey, Jay, it’s me. Mom and
				Dad around?
				JASON (OS)
Oh, uh, no. Dad’s at the rest-
aurant and Mom’s at the mall,
				I think.
				TIM
Can you try to get them on the
				phone?
INT. CHASE HOME SAME
JASON speaks on the phone in the kitchen.
				JASON
				Yeah. Why?
				TIM (OS)
				I’m at the hospital.
Enter COURTNEY.
				JASON
No – what happened?!? Are you
				okay?
				TIM (OS)
				It’s Claire.
				JASON
				The baby?
				TIM (OS)
				Exactly. She just went into
				the delivery room.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY	SAME
TIM speaks on the payphone.
				TIM
				(cont’d)
If you can’t get them, just
				get down here.
				JASON (OS)
				Okay. Sure. Bye.
				TIM
				Bye.
Tim hangs the phone up.
INT. FISHER HOME SAME
JASON hangs up the phone in the kitchen. COURTNEY stands behind him.
				COURTNEY
				Was that Tim?
				JASON
Yeah. I need to get down to the
				hospital.
				COURTNEY
				Did Claire go into labor?
				JASON
Mmm-hmm. Why don’t you come with
me, and then we can try to get
my parents on the cell phone?
Jason picks up car keys off the hook on the wall.
				COURTNEY
				Sure thing.
They leave the kitchen in a rush.
ACT IV
INT. HOTEL ROOM EVENING
BRENT and MOLLY sit on the sofa, with a good amount of distance between them.
				MOLLY
I know you’d rather not deal
with this, Brent, but I think
that we need to. It’s the only
				way that being around each
				other won’t be awkward.
				BRENT
				But …
He trails off.
				MOLLY
				Brent, we both know exactly
				happened between us. And I’m
not saying we need to act on
that, or anything. But I am
saying that we need to get all
of this out in the open.
Brent responds to her with silence.
				MOLLY
I’ll admit that I did feel
something when we … when we
kissed. But I was nervous about
the stalker, and it was night,
				and everything just kinda came
				together. It just happened.
				BRENT
				Yeah.
				MOLLY
				(cont’d)
				But I … I think about it a
				lot.
				BRENT
				(surprised)
				You do?
				MOLLY
Yeah. I, uh, I worry about
				it. About Sarah and Craig
finding out.
				BRENT
				Oh, oh. So do I.
Out on Brent, appearing to talk to himself in his head.
INT. CHASE HOME AFTERNOON
The living room is empty. HELEN comes down the stairs and pauses.
				HELEN
				I must’ve been hearing things.
I could swear that I heard
				someone moving around upstairs.
But there was no one there …
She continues on into the entry hall and leaves through the front door. The sounds of her locking the door can be heard from inside.
Once the sound ceases, the door to the closet opens. SHANNON steps out, looking fatigued.
				SHANNON
That was way too close. But
at least she didn’t catch me.
She begins to unlock the front door.
				SHANNON
				(cont’d)
				Now that the speaker’s been
planted, I can get on with my
plan. But first … first I need
to get the hell outta here.
She opens the door and leaves, slamming it behind her.
INT. HOSPITAL HALLWAY SAME
TIM paces nervously, dressed in hospital garb. Enter JASON and COURTNEY, rushing.
				JASON
				How’s she doing?
				TIM
She’s fine. I was waiting for
you to get here. I’m gonna go
in and help with the delivery,
				okay?
				JASON
Yeah, fine. Mom and Dad are
				on their way.
Tim goes into the delivery room. Jason and Courtney remain in the hallway.
				JASON
				(cont’d)
Why don’t we sit down, Court?
				COURTNEY
				Okay.
				(beat)
				I hope everything goes okay
				with the delivery.
				JASON
				Don’t worry. It will. The
				pregnancy’s been very normal
				the whole time. I don’t—
				PAULA (O.S.)
				(interrupting)
				Where is she?
BILL and PAULA enter into the frame.
				BILL
				How’s she doing?
				JASON
Fine, I guess. Tim just went
				into the delivery room.
				PAULA
Oh, Bill, can you believe it?
				Our first grandchild!
				BILL
				(laughing)
				I’d rather not believe it!
				PAULA
				Bill, you don’t mean that!
				BILL
				No, I don’t … but I can’t
				believe we’re going to be
				grandparents so soon.
				PAULA
Neither can I, Bill … neither
				can I.
ACT V
INT. HOTEL ROOM EVENING
BRENT and MOLLY sit on the couch, in the middle of a discussion.
				MOLLY
I have to ask you, Brent:
When we kissed, did you feel
				anything? Anything at all?
				BRENT
				Well, I, uh – I’m really not
				too comfortable talking about
this right now. Can we just
				put it off?
He stands up.
				MOLLY
I wanna get this cleared up
as soon as possible – so I
don’t have to carry it around
				with me, you know.
				BRENT
Why, Molly? Why? Did you feel
				something?
Molly silently ponders this.
The door opens. Enter CRAIG SIMMONS.
				CRAIG
				Did she feel what, Brent?
Out on Molly’s panic.
INT. OFFICE HALLWAY AFTERNOON
JAMES steps out of Diane’s office, nervous.
				JAMES
				I shouldn’t have threatened
her … I have got to stop
meddling in Claire’s life.
(beat)
But I know this Diane is up
to something. She has to be.
(beat)
Still, if she figures out
that I’m connected to the mob,
she’ll squeal to Claire on
me. And then – then I’ll have
lost the one thing that really
matters to me … my daughter.
INT. DIANE’S OFFICE SAME
DIANE sits in her chair, her feet propped up on the desk.
				DIANE
What did he mean by "stay out
of Claire’s life … or else?"
				Was he threatening me? There’s
something to that guy … he’s
more than he seems. I know
				there’s something wrong with
				this picture.
INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM	SAME
JASON, COURTNEY, and PAULA sit waiting. BILL is pacing. Enter SARAH TAYLOR.
				SARAH
				Hi, everyone … How’s Claire?
Bill stops pacing.
				BILL
She’s fine. Tim came down and
				told us everything’s going
				well.
				SARAH
Oh … oh, good. So, how does it
very to be on the verge of
				grandparenthood?
				BILL
				(jokingly)
				Don’t toy with me, dear.
As the group laughs, DR. SMITH enters the room.
				DR. SMITH
I’m proud to announce to you
				all that Mrs. Fisher deliver-
ed a healthy baby boy just
				a few minutes ago.
The room erupts in cheers.
										CUT TO:
INT. DELIVERY ROOM SAME
In the bed, CLAIRE looks exhausted. TIM stands nearby, in hospital garb. An array of hospital personnel fills the room.
				NURSE
				Mrs. Fisher, would you like
				to hold your son?
				CLAIRE
				Of course.
She stretches her arms out.
				CLAIRE
				(cont’d)
				Tim, I can’t believe it!
				TIM
				I know. You did it.
				CLAIRE
No, we did it. I couldn’t have
				gotten through this without
you by my side. I love you.
				TIM
				I love you, too, honey.
A NURSE approaches, holding the BABY.
				NURSE
				Here he is.
She places the baby carefully in Claire’s arms.
				CLAIRE
				Oh, Tim, look!
Staring at the baby’s features, Tim shudders.
										CUT TO:
FLASHBACK
EXT. ALLEY NIGHT
A GUN is held against TIM’S chest by a HAND.
The view slides down the hand to reveal a man, ALAN.
				ALAN
Mr. Robbins has a message for
				you, Tim.
										CUT TO:
INT. DELIVERY ROOM AFTERNOON
TIM stands over CLAIRE, who is in the bed holding the BABY.
Tim looks shaken.
				CLAIRE
				What is it, Tim?
				TIM
				I just remembered who shot
				me.
Claire gasps.
Hold on Tim looking down at a shocked Claire and the baby.
